Important Instructions

This site was created to provide an up-to-date, electronic version of the Resources Careers Manual.   Some pages of the manual appear on the screen as formatted for the World Wide Web and can be printed from the browser.   Other pages are formatted in PDF (Portable Document Format) and require Adobe Acrobat Reader to be viewed, saved or printed.  However, you MUST have a copy of version 4.0 or later of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.  An earlier version may not work properly.

If you have an earlier version of Adobe Acrobat Reader or have not yet installed this software application on your computer, you should stop now and install Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 from the CD which contains this information.   Assuming that your CD drive is D: and that you have operating system Windows 95 or above, go to your desktop, click on start, then click on run, then type in the name of the file: "d:/applications/adobe/ar40eng.exe", and, finally, click on OK.   Follow the directions on the screen and Adobe Acrobat version 4.0 will be installed on your PC.  NOTE: Be sure to uninstall the earlier version.

If you have Version 4.0 or later of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer and you click on a reference to a PDF document, this dialog box may be displayed:

If you select to "Open" it, the document will be displayed on your monitor. You simply scroll through the document to read it.  Select "File" in the upper left of the monitor to print the document.

You should verify that your printer is properly set up to print a PDF file.   Most new printers can print a PDF document with standard settings; other printers may need special configuration.   Consult the user manual for your specific printer.

If you select to "Save" it to disk, a"Save As" dialog box will be displayed on your monitor, so that you can determine where the document will be saved.  You can specify a file name for the saved document -- with a .pdf extension -- or just use the default name, which appears in the dialog box.

Adobe Acrobat Reader offers several set up options and you can configure it so that when you click on a reference to a PDF document, the above dialog box will be bypassed and the document will be automatically opened in the reader.   CAUTION:  If you open a document in this manner, make sure that you use the "back" button and do not try to "close" the document.   Otherwise you will close the browser -- perhaps before you are ready to do so.
