Statue of Liberty NM

STATUE OF LIBERTY NATIONAL MONUMENT. The Statue of Liberty, standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor at the very portal of the New World, is one of the most colossal sculptures in the history of the world; and it has greeted many millions of the oppressed and of the venturesome of other lands who have crossed the ocean in hopeful search for greater freedom and opportunity. It was a gift of the French people to the citizens of the United Stares, commemorating the long friendship between the two Nations. The cost of constructing the pedestal was subscribed by Americans, school children taking part in the campaign. It rests upon an old 11-pointed star fortification, part of Old Fort Wood, constructed as a defense of New York Harbor.
