ANOTHER TRAVEL RECORD

The 1939 season saw Mesa Verde again set a new travel record. In the travel year ending September 30, 1939, 32,246 visitors entered the park. This was an increase of 4.3 per cent over 1938.

Visitors registered from each of the forty-eight states, as well as from Alaska, Hawaii, the Canal Zone, the Philippines and thirteen foreign countries.

EXCAVATION

Last summer the members of the Naturalist force excavated a Developmental Pueblo pit house near the park well. Excavation has made necessary when a trench for a pipeline cut directly into the ruin. This was the first excavation of a ruin of this period in the park.

The pit house was a large square, semi-subterranean room with a small southern antechamber. The roof had burned so the only artifacts found were those of an imperishable nature, such as metates, manos, pottery and stone hammers.
